I know there are some opportunists that are editors, and to some degree there are checks and balances, but I believe certain Metas pretty much do whatever they want. Some of these can be justified, so please don't think I am saying these are not supposed to be there (judge for yourself). Here is a listing of the domains with the most listings in DMOZ:

http://www.whois.sc/internet-statist...-listings.html

If you look, I think you will find some real winners (sarcastic tone of course).

Yes, quite a lot of them are virtually unheard of, and probably don't deserve to be there.

Must be because they're outdated already...I read somewhere that it can take up to three years to be listed in DMOZ.

I agree, I think it is going downhill. Google and the other big players needs to pump some more money into it to get it cleaned up and keep it up to date. The volunteer thing is obviously not working out too well...

DMOZ can be a mess, but it is a great help to be listed there. My site was listed after a few months (five years ago), but I had to use an alternative method to get listed.

I browsed DMOZ and found a category UNRELATED to webmaster resources that had a lot of editors listed at the bottom. I then contacted a couple of them stating somewthing like this "I have been submitting to the webmaster resources section once a month for well over a year now, and I am being ignored. I was hoping maybe you could point me in the right direction. I tried contacting the appropriate editors asking what I can do to be considered and again, they ignored my plea".

I soon received a response from one of the UNRELATED editors stating they have forwarded my message to the appropriate editors and they were sorry fo my frustration. One month later my site was listed.

I beleive the unrelated catagory editors (childhood education, or something similar) took pity and seemed nicer. The webmaster related editors must get bombarded with submissions making them less caring.

Let me know if this method works for anyone else.

I think they just need to get rid of these editors. Sorry but if they aren't doing their job then they have no right to access the directory. I have heard that a lot of these "editors" are in it just to get thier site listed. THAT'S WRONG ... and that's why I don't use dmoz anymore.

MightyMaster, I agree, most editors only join to add there own sites, but they are not all bad (depending on the category). Anything strickly WEB related seems to be more of a problem. I don't use DMOZ myself, however, when it comes to Google, getting listed in DMOZ does help. For example, if you search Google for "webmaster resources", SearchBliss is #10 on page 1 (at the moment). The title AND description are from DMOZ "word for word", see:
Google: http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...ster+resources
DMOZ: http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/searc...ster+resources
When you click the cashed link on Google you'll see both are completely different.

My current description/title wouldn't show on page 1 for this keyword phrase without DMOZ. SearchBliss does show on page 1 with many other phrases. My point being, with my DMOZ listing, I can taget more keywords and phrases (on Google) more successfully.

I hope I made my point. So if you're not listed, try. Don't give up, just try to get through to SOMEBODY.

This topic really went nuts on DP, and it seems we actually got some results from DMOZ.

They might just keep trying and trying until they finally get in bugging the editors by e-mail who knows what extent they take this to in order to get on DMOZ.
