Just curious, I personally like Google. I seen a few people complain that it doesn't give relevant results, but if you ask me they just don't know how to use it properly as I can always seem to find what I'm looking for.
I also like the Google toolbar, not only is it good for remote searches, but great for highlighting words on any page and if you have the version with PageRank you can also use it to help you're promotional efforts.
Am I right in thinking that Google is a popular choice amongst webmasters? Or are there any others out there that are worth a mention?

Hey Tiger....I mean Tiggy
I prefer Google myself. Ocassionally I will use the Yahoo directory (uses Google as web page results anyway)....
I also really like to use www.DogPile.com (displays results from several engines) when I need to search for something a little less common and if Google does not help....
Cheers!

Was it difficult becoming an editor at DMOZ? I ask because I have seen several reports from people having difficulty being accepted recently.
I think I'm listed at DMOZ, at least, the last time I checked I was - not had many people come through them tho, but that could be related to fact that web design and site ownership are common topics...

I tried 3 times, third time I was in. It's for webportals (Dutch category) tho. Off course it's harder to get in for e.g. web design (in English)...

I tried to apply to become an editor once and I never heard anything...
It not only seems tough to become an editor there, it takes forever just to get your site reviewed in some categories.
DMOZ is a great direcotry. I jusy remember submitting one of my sites to a category that had an editor....After waiting a month, I emailed him to see what was the problem...Never heard anything...I emailed the editor one category up....Never heard anything. I finally was able to get in touch with an editor who told me the editor was no longer active and there were like 70 other sites sitting there to be reviewed... Yuck!
Anyway, I eventually did get the site in.

Hello everyone,
Ive tried getting a site of mine into a different catagory after changing the sites content, after many attempts I gave up as guess what yep you got it no editor for the herbs spices catagory.
It seems rather daft to me that dmoz are reluctant to allow people to become editors when they are desparate for them.
Anyway ill be around these forums poking my nose in here and there

Hey maluk,
Welcome to the forums! Thankings for posting. We have a few members who are reluctant to post for the first time.
I take it that the site never made it it in yet?
1. Ask for a site review for that site and we may be able to give you some tips...
2. Start a new post here called "DMOZ help" if you want some tips on improving your chances to make it in. (I don't want to post those in this thread).
It's great to have you with us Maluk! I hope to here from you again soon.

The site is world foods
and yes it is listed within open directory, the problem we had was when we first launched this site it had around a thousand products and foods from all over the world. We decided to change the products to just herbs spices as this would be easier to market than a site with many different products like japanese korean ect, also glass food products can be very expensive to package.
In order to gain a higher listing for herbs or spices it would be important to google that the site was placed in a category with herbs spices in it rather than the one we were listed in .
The problem we have is there is no editor in the category we need a listing in within the open directory.
Bye the way, this site is a full on line e-business and receives orders daily, however the main purpose for the site is to experiment with all the engines out there and has some very good listings in them.
Thanks for you reply.

Google really is my main choice for surfing. Sometimes I also use WebFerret which searches many search engines all at once. That reminds me, I need to download that again for my new PC.
I use iwon.com now and then mainly in hopes I win the money. I build up my 100 entries for the day while doing other things and it only takes about 5 - 10 minutes. The daily surveys are neat.
AltaVista is used by me mainly for the language translator. I even used it when thinking up the name Drachewyn. Drache is German for Dragon and that is where that came from. Wyn is a common ending of medieval names so I just stuck the two together.
Well those are my choices.

Google, Google and Google one more time It's really the Search Engine from the big letter... It gives good result... and by the way it's really popular in countries like Poland, Ukraine or Russia because it's multilanguigal (there is almost every SE support many languages at that moment but the Google gives much more relevant results than others IMHO).
It drive 90 % of traffic from search engines to my old site and now the same situation... and my main target in SEO is Google...
By the way what about emotions buttons in Googlebar does anyone know where is information available on them and when votes from them will be counted in overall site rating?

I just use Google, Google, and more Google. There really isn't any other search engine that can compete with it. Occasionally, I might try Altavista (very rarely), Teoma (just to see their progress), and even NorthernLight (they are really sad). I've never used any of the search engine compilers more than once; they never seem to work correctly for me.
Google's adwords may be flawed, seeing the views of many on this board, but clearly, their ranking method helps bring about the best results. Also, I like their "no flourish" design. It just shows what they are: a plain and simple search engine not needing all those fancy gimmicks. Another thing is that they are fast. Lastly, their little features, like the spelling corrections and the "Cached" features I really like (the "Cached" feature is important for me if I need just one webpage for information, but it's on a free host that's blocked, like Geocities). And to think I didn't like them when they first came out!
Now, I can't understand why anyone would use Yahoo for the search engine (I love their directories, and they are probably still one of the best around, second only to Dmoz). Their search engine is just a rarely updated version of Google's databases. The newest entries to Google aren't included at all, and therefore, you're getting less results (and including many sites that may not exist anymore). It's just like using Google Directories instead of Dmoz themselves. Could any Yahoo user clarify why they still prefer Yahoo?

Google is the best search engine to find the results you are looking for. I used to use Altavista.com, but they have poor results lately.
