The Other Search Engines

Hi everyone,
I just joined this community. I am trying to get help regarding creating search for small commercial web site. It is a www.petersons.com like web site and want to have search tool. I do not want to pay to any company which provides search tool by charging monthly. I can not even use google's API because it is not a non-commercial site. How should i go about getting help to create search tool which can be as good as i can make it. Is there enough help about coding it and enough literature about how to approach it.
I am willing to know a lot about it.

I may be incorrect, but I think Google's free search offering is not limited to non-commercial sites. Not many customization options, though:

I've also used:
http://www.freefind.com
who are quite good.

If you want full flexibility take a look at some of the scripts at:
http://www.hotscripts.com
There are a lot of scripts there which, although may need some knowledge to set them up, should do what you are looking for.
