It's not a very good method that they use. Basically they base it on two systems:
1. If you download the Alexa toolbar, it tells them what pages you visit. This allows it to get a rough representation of who visits what on the internet, and they simply use the assumption that their userbase represents a certain percentage of internet users to calculate rankings and traffic. Unfortunately, this has two problems. Firstly, it is easy to manipulate the rankings and secondly, the results are skewed slightly towards the demographics of their user base.
2. The number of times a site is accessed/searched for/viewed on their own site. Obviously, this is very inaccuarate.

Basically, Alexa rankings are good for a rough idea of a site's size, but mustn't be interpreted literally.

the system can be easily cheated if you have a rank of 100.000 or higher.

Have you tried cheating their system ? Do you have a Case to discuss ? would love to know about that.

I think most of the readers would be happy to hear !!

when I said that I didn't really mean that I found a secret little way to cheat the system or that there is one. I don't cheat the system. All I said is that the ranks over 100.000 are very unstable. I wouldn't base my buying decision on alexa rankings, that is if ranks are over 100.000.
Here's a good example: My friend receives about twice as much traffic as I do, but doesn't rank as well as my website.
hostlead.com 155,458, 700-800 unique visitors on a normal day
pricenetwork.ca 242,717, but receives about twice as much uniques per day.
Do not ask me why. I have no idea.
FYI he does not (partially) block the alexa spider.
It is important to realize that you cannot expect the score to be around 75.000 (twice as much traffic) since there may be more/less sites in that range, and vise versa. But my friend should have a higher score, or I should have a lower one. But since I watched my traffic and rank increase I don't think that my rank is wrong.
Also if I redirect several websites to one web site then the alexa ranking of the site that is getting all the traffic from all the other web sites will go up.
So imagine you want to buy a domain on e-bay and the person tells you it has a rank of 100.000. You cannot verify that since maybe the traffic of other sites is redirected to the web site that is for sale.
A 'cheat' I heard about a while ago was a group of people who downloaded the toolbar and visited a certain web site several times per day, which boosted their site to a rank of about 200.000.

Is one's Alexa ranking good for anything? My Alexa ranking is 332,994. I get about 1000 unique hits per day and my Google PR is 5. On Alexa it still shows "web picture coming soon" as it has for the past few months. When will they ever put my "web picture" up? How does one get them to do so? Does having a good Alexa ranking do anything good for you? If so, what? Thanks!

Alexa Is Bunk

Alexa is far from accurate, and does nothing for you. The traffic rankings is just gimmick to get webmasters to install the toolbar, so more people visit Alexa. Entirely worthless, IMO.

Is there a better alternative to Alexa. I agree that Alexa is grossly inaccurate (I had a site that received only 30-50 uniques per day, but was ranked better than 250k), but does anyone know of a better tool (other than the google's pagerank)?
