Babel Fish Translation is a good thing about AltaVista. But I definitely love GOOGLE!

Google is very dominant. Everyone loves to google around the web.

Back in the days, altavista was the king. It was the only search engine that I used, and a couple of metatags and you ranked well. Those where the days before Google.

Altavista USED to be good back in the day. Their problem was that, when people started discovering how to manipulate it (doorway pages, copying code from high-ranking SERP pages, etc.) they decided to go to an algo that appeared to show random results each day. At that point, it was the beginning of the end for them as a top-tier engine.

And if someone ever figures out how to tie social bookmarking and SEs together in such a way as not to be manipulated, then the engines as we know it will be a thing of the past too.

I rarely check my rankings in altavista. They are certainly behind the big 3 these days which is rather sad as I remember back when they were probably the #1 search engine!
