Do links out affect link popularity?

I was looking through my logs for the last few days to see what I could pick up, and I noticed that I have quite a few robots requesting my "links out" script for each ID I have listed...

Since the script is really a gateway, and I want to keep the robots away from useless pages - I thought I might want to take steps to prevent robots from accessing them to save server resources (when the bots behave that is).

What I want to know is, do the links out of the site make any impact on those engines that use themes and link popularity? I know that the more relavent sites linking to mine the better, but I wondered if the same was true of outbound links...

Is there any evidence to suggest that a site will perform better in the engines by using direct links as opposed to ones going through say a link redirection script or click counter?

Good questions Tiggy.

I have some IMO comments on this, but I have to run out for a little while, so I'll try and get back to this post tonight or in the morning...

Links out won't necessarily impact your popularity - but they can with engines like Google have a big impact on where your site is listed in results. I'm not sure that they matter with any engine except google.

Links out to sites on-topic, with the keyword in the anchor text can be a benefit.

Links out to sites that google considers spam can result in a zero pagerank.

Links in and out of a site are both important as it lets the spider determine the theme of a site, the theme of a site if concentrated on your primary keyphrase can override all other factors such as html meta tags keyword weight prominence ect and boost your ranking in the search engines that use themes as a ranking algorithm.
If your site is about fishing then link TO important fishing sites and also have inbound links that has fishing in the link text to your site.
Hope this helps.

I agree with Maluk.

Links out are important if in an organized hierarchy theme.
TO expand on the fishing idea, if you had a site about:

fishing, link to another page (on your site) about
-boating
-directory of lakes
-page about different fish species

then have those pages link to 'quality' sites about
those themes. Some engines will see your site as a better
resource simply because your site has an 'organized' theme
related to fishing.

In fact even if your site is mostly links this is true. Of course
articles and editorial content is important too. But I have
had at least 20 new daily visitors to a site about video
games from google for over a year.

The site is simply and organized list of links:

video games
- manuals
- cheats' walkthroughs
- downloads
- game stores

again, this site was mostly links and nothing else! Yet
I am sure the fact that there was a noticeable theme
in the links contrinuted a lot to the popularity of the site in question.

Inbound links are the most valuable of all.

Links out won't necessarily harm you,

links in... with NO LINKS OUT..
won't harm either..

* the healthy content of inbound links..
is the utmost goal, regardless if you
have any outbound links.

goodluck.

Again, SiteTutor is correct.

You may have no links at all. In fact it is better to have
article content and no links.

Keep in mind though that affiliate links out, that have
a ? in them are often ignored.

Do you mean just one page full of articles with no other pages or links?

If so, I would disagree.

If you mean just links pointing to other pages then your site, then I agree somewhat. It is helpful to use keyword in your links which point to other pages on your site...

I'll try to explain what I mean more shortly....

No not just one page. The more pages the better!

I mean no links to other sites.
