I think that was a silly decision to make, on their part.
Over the last few years, the service has been targeted at people who would rather "talk" to the search engine, typing in questions. Of course, we all know that it'll strip out any elements of question before even searching, but that's not the point - they were targeting non-savvy web users, and now they're trying to attract more experienced users.
The more experience users aren't stupid, and as you both pointed out, it's a pretty bad service. I have a friend who uses it "just to get home-made sites". Says something.
Personally, I would've stuck with the "you're talking to a butler" strategie. Unless they make some serious improvements, they're just another one of the many low quality search engines.
