Let's say If someone was launching a site industry specific . How would one go about determining, on the keyword research side, how big or small the tail of the search terms in that industry are?

Basically, looking for a methodology to measure the value of being listed in the top for a few, hig volume search terms in the head vs. the value of having rankings for the thousands of smaller terms making up the tail. Other than simply using intuition and logic, one can't seem to think of a good way to do it.

That's about the size of it!
Is there another way ?
Intuition is what separates good SEOs from the mediocre ones and the also-rans.

Something wrong with having both ??

Hi,
To approach an "industry," I'd want to get a look at what works for
that industry's longer standing niche publications. What concerns
re-surface regularly? Are they adequately addressed? Would these concerns be of more interest to customers or colleagues?
Would it be helpful to look at how a customer hears about and chooses who to hire or buy from?

You can try creating a campaign on adword and enter a suggestion for keyword. The tool will generate for you many keywords and you can see how much search volume each one gets.

You should look for keywords that are less competitive but give a good traffic.

A good way to tell this is the number of clicks that the estimator in google adwords provides. If there are alot of people clicking on sponsored links, then there are alot of people looking through the organic listings. Each industry has so many dynamics that your intuition and logic, or your past experiences with competing, is what you will need to go on. Check out nichebot or overtures keyword tool to see the varieties of the searched terms.
