Why Buy a Search Engine?

Over the past 6 months or so, I have seen a number of search engines and meta search engines sold on eBay. The most notable was Jux2 which sold for over $100,000. Obviously there were a lot of bidders and lots of interest, but what is the business rationale for buying a search engine or meta search engine?

Search engines also seem to be the new big thing in made for AdSesne (MFA) sites lately, but for $100,000 I'm thinking someone is looking for more than income from AdSense.

I've started a search engine that has a different concept than traditional search engine. It's only been 2 months and I am already beginning to see some of the real potential of having a search engine.

People buy ads from you and you can also place adsense to make money. If your search engine has the traffic then there are many potential to make money. On top of that I am already getting offers from people to buy the site. So you can image that there are many potential for having a search engine.

Yes this rush is all Google induced people think they can go multi money after starting a search engine. The reality is gonna hit hard though as they realize google is going to do better or if you are succeding fidn a way to what you are doing only better. Trust it's always like that with big companies take wal-mart for example.

Thank You

Yeah, google has made search engines into something much bigger, google would be making only a couple thousand dollars a year if they didn't expand into all these extra things surrounding their search engine such as google earth, gmail etc.. which is bringing them much more attention.

I think it was the search engine itself that brought Google attention. Most people aren't even aware of all the other things they offer outside of maps and gmail.

The search engine alone though guaranteed them billions as soon as they added the advertising

I agree with both vangogh + Xeserve, even though that's an oxymoron...

Google certainly became what it is (like all good sites should) from providing a good service. But on the internet, webmasters and geeks (I use that term nicely) are the most powerful force, and they know how to keep us all happy!

Other than Google search and AdSense/Adwords, there isn't really much that the general public regularly use.
