Google was founded toward the end of 1998, so you wouldn't have had much time. But what does ten years ago have to do with today?

Only trouble here is that people won't use some unknown search engine just because you rank better there...

There are ten lucky souls on the first page of EVERY search query.

What has ten years ago got to do with today? Do I really need to explain? Just as what were the top SE's 10 years ago are no longer leading, in ten years from now, the picture might well also be similar, with new SE's leading.

The thing is that just because you don't know of other search engines, don't mean nobody knows they're there. And people do use relatively "unknown" search engines. Log files don't lie.

That's exactly my point - 10 lucky souls on page 1 of every query. Only 10. And getting to page 1 for terms that are not going to lead to sales is merely ego-food. So if you can't compete on search terms that will lead to sales on one search engine, it is worth exploring wherever you can.

Don't use the companies that say they will submit your site to 1000's of smaller engines. You are going to get 95% of your traffic from about 4-5 search engines, including Google, MSN, Yahoo, Ask.com and a few others.

Work on SEO for your site and you will get found in all the search engines that you need to without having to submit to them.

Alot of these pay for search engine services seem more like scams.

The only real search engines we should worry about right now is google and yahoo. And I barely use yahoo anymore.

Ask.com is getting popular as well.

Submit your site to the major search engines Google, Yahoo, MSN. Before you submit your link to a directories , you need to evaluated it, the PR , traffic and quality of link. Not only search engines, directories but you can promote your site to high rank classified ads, forums , blog, articles, social bookmarking. Blogs and social bookmarking is the alternative way for web traffic.

Why would you spend any time submitting your site to search engines? If you have some links pointing to your site, like in the signature of a forum, the search engines will find you on their own.

But I agree about submitting to directories and I think it makes sense to research them since not all directories are worth submitting to.
