Hi elserioso, I wouldn't advice you to use any of submission software as they mostly done harm not help. IMHO the best way to submit is to manually place your links to search engines forms this could be time consuming but it's most safe as using of some submission software is counted like a spamming of SE and it could penalt you for this. There is many issues among the web on this matter. Some search enigines is at the state of war with such software. If you don't have time for manual submission try to hire some SEO who'll do this job for you. Also avoid search submission services which promise you to put your link on thousands search engine as they also should use online form or some software to do this kind of job and you'll probably get poor results.

Most major search engine see submission software a tool of spammers. They will either ignore the submission or penalize the submission. If you look at the TOS of most search engines, they tell you NOT to use software.

Most of the submission software out there will submit your sites to mostly FFA pages anyway. FFA pages produce a ton of spam and no value. You will get no traffic and you will be penalized for having your site on FFA pages.

Submit by hand. It takes a bit of time, but is well worth it. There are only a few major search engines left, so it will not take you weeks to submit.

The Majors worth submitting to:

AltaVista
All The Web
Open Directory Project
Google
Inktomi
Yahoo
Wisenut
Teoma

If you get into each of these, you are golden. This is all that is left of the majors. There are several regional and country specific engines you can look at, but most pull data from one of these sources.

Hey elserioso,

I agree with the prior two posts. There is also a post with the direct "add URL"s for the major search engines. Let me see if I can find the link

what if you have a lot of sites to get listed on the major engines? Is there a satisfactory bulk (batch submission) solution?

As I said before you can hire SEO professional, or maybe not the best solution but I use it myself sometimes is to use some online form which will submit you to top ten engines, just be sure this site provide updated links to search engine, as SE change the placement of submission form from time to time to protect themself from submission software for example, don't use scrip submission from small sites, better choose one in which you'll be sure. I choose such site for myself which along with submission to Top Ten provides paid services on optimization, submission and ranking so they are care about custumer opinoon and have thier site updated.
Another way you can find voulonteers which will do this job for you almost free, for example for advertisemenet of thier business or sites.
I was just curious how many sites you have to submit?

How many sites are you talking about? Are they completely different or are they mirror sites? Are you talking about submitting a bunch of doorway pages? I would be curious to know why you would need a batch submission.
