Can anyone explain this to me?

The guy has 50 posts here, and must have made some positive contribution in at least one of them, or chances are he'd get tired of people pulling the fangs out of his spam, right?

If he had just said "I'm launching a new search engine, the url is http://whatever" not only would the link not be edited out of the message and the guy not labeled a spammer, but people would have checked the site out, and offered advice and ideas on how he could improve it.

Why do people decide to be dishonest instead?

Because they're not looking for intelligent people to visit their sites, John. It's what I call "idiot marketing"...the dumber the customer, the more likely (s)he are to stick the fish hook in his/her mouth and end up in the boat.

They also fall into a pattern. when they have spent the last 6 months looking for cons and shortcuts they find it hard to break out of that routine.

I always laugh when i think about them expecting people to fall for it. I can picture him sitting at home now scratching his head wondering what went wrong with his cunning plan.

You should make a cartoon of your vision, Stox, that would be hilarious. I'm kind of chuckling about it right now. The guy sitting at his computer, with an evil, maniacle laugh like the witch from the Wizard of Oz, going on about how he's going to outsmart all these web people, then cut to a few days later, and total confusion. "But my plans were SO good!"

Not jealous or judgemental, merely suspicious of anything that looks like a link drop.
