This probably isn't such a sensational bit of news as I might have made out in the title, but I just wanted to get your attention

Basically I read the following in 'The Economist' (Be My PayPal, June 13th). It may be common knowledge in the US but this is the first I've heard of it:
Quote:
One rumour doing the rounds in Silicon Valley is that Yahoo!, the leading web portal is keen to buy Google, a popular search service. Whether the deal will actually happen depends on which venture capitalist you ask. Some say it is only a question of price, others that Google is in it for the long run. But that is just what PayPal executives were saying until recently.
Personally, I don't think Yahoo will buy Google in the near future. I think that if the people running Google were in it for a quick profit there would be far more adverts on their site. I think they've got a great business there (especially with the provision of search results to so many sites) and they will be happy with building it up over the next few years.

It does worry me though, that if Yahoo did take over Google, it would never be the same again. It would probably be filled with adverts within weeks and covered with links to other Yahoo sites. I'd much rather it stayed independent.

So how does everyone else feel about it? Will Google sell out? Will it be a good thing for the web?

Google, deservedly becomming the worlds leading search engine, have achieved their status because they are fast, efficient, and deliver top quality results.

the site is simple, its designed for its purpose, nothing else. you go there to search, so you don't want a site covered in adverts. it has a clever scheme of allowing sponsored links, and thus it makes money. you sponser keywords and phrases, and get your link on the results. this is much better than adverts.

the whole success of google is because it is simple. it looks simple, its easy to understand, easy to use, and its so powerful its great. simple design for quick loading, presents the results clearly and concisely, when you compare google to altavista, there is no comparison, google all the way.

i would hate for google to sell out to yahoo. primarily because it wouldn't be the same. if they kept it how it is, then i wouldn't have a problem, because it would not change. if it was simply a switch of revenue income from one company to another, and they let the same people run it, no problem. if they change it, screw it up with adverts and promotions and links to all sorts of other non-interesting areas of their site, then i would have to go looking for another, better search engine. one that was simple and concise, because thats all a search engine needs to be

hmm if Yahoo buys Google, who knows what horrific things they might do to it! Google is the best search engine site now, I really dislike Yahoo, I dont know why I kinda always did. If Yahoo buys Google then I guess imma have to pick another searching site.
Hmmm MSN, mamma, AOL.

Well it would not be all bad, Might even be good with so much money behind google they could add some really nice features. WAIT, they dont need any more features. Well I doubt google will sell out, since it seems like they have been working on some more tools for webmasters like the API things.

yahoo isnt even a search engine
its a human maintained database and probably the most out of date database in the world

they make quality websites pay for listings but they keep geocites sites listed which usually havent been updated since 1996

just about everytime you do a search now they revert to googles search facilities
