Hello,

I see people making submissions to every directory then can lay their hands on. I looked at a few directories; the look like they can pass off as a directory allright. But, seriously, how much leverage do you get out of random submissions? I mean how much leverage from the quantity of submissions? Do you think it has much effect on visibility?

Thanks. Swayam.

Linkbuilding by submitting to directories helps to increase your search engine traffic. The degree to which it helps really depends on the quality of your site in terms of your content. I would say, based on the fact that a lot of large companies invest in making sure their sites appear in directories, that submitting to directories is worth while. You should always have a good balance between advertising and managing your content. All of your advertising is a waste if you don't have good content and all of your content is a waste if you don't have good advertising.

There are a lot of rubbish web directories out there which are automated, create pages automatically, search engines blacklist those ones as soon as they can. If you make submissions to those directories be sure to make a lot of submissions and all the time because they disappear quickly. If you want to have more of an affect choose your web directories for their quality. By all means check how long they have been running on alexa, get recommendations. Human edited directories are favoured by search engines, esp. google because they are less generic. They are likely to last longer as well as taking better care of your submission because it means more to them. Have a look at my directory and compare it to other free directories, if you know what to look for it's worth doing, unlike endlessly submitting to spam web directories.

Flesco is right. If you submit to PR4 directory and higher, then at least you
know that they were around for a while and most likely going to be here tomorrow.

But then again, there are some directories (from directories cottage industry)
with high PR and only 500 links in their Index because they got their links in
most cases generated by reciprocal exchanges with PR0 sites and it’s up to
you if you want to list your site in directories without traffic.
