* sighs * That's Digital Pointless thinking. People link to sites that are worth linking to, and if they're not giving you a link, they're telling you something you probably don't want to hear.

Real directories don't require link exchange, since they generate enough traffic and referrals on the basis of quality. And real directory owners don't drop eBook links in their posts.

Jason,

Adam has given you the answer

I just wanted to add that im one of those designers that wouldnt encourange a site to link back to a directory like yours just for the sake of a link - Not what you want to hear, but thats the way it is.

If a directory is relevent for the clients site we will add it. We wont upload a sites details if they have to link back as a condition - its that simple.

The outbound links on our clients site we want them to be relevent to their site. IE we will link out from a site to a resource or site that is useful to our clients audiance NOT just any old site, we will link to another resource irrespective of them linking back.

With a directory if you want a great directory that sites will want to refer users to then you need to make it "Great" and be better than any other directory site on the net. When you have created that, websites will link to you without even listing in your directory because they feel you are a great resource to a) be associated with and b) a useful site for their visitors to be made aware of.

If i was running a directory i would be selective on what sites i listed, not make linking back mandatory and build a great resource. Then later i could charge clients that wanted to list in it - just my two pennys worth

Hope it helps

Rich

Very well put, Rich. I'm not sure about paid listings (I'm not even sure about paid reviews), but the rest of the comments you made are bang-on.

Yeah some good advice there rich, seems directory owners just concentrate on adding as many links as they can, rather than concentrating on quality listings.
