One good strategy is to be present on the most important forums and submit your website to the most fresh directories. Like this you will keep your approval rate high.
Half of links in directorycritic.com are dead and another half swiched to paid long time ago.
The problem is jackass owner who cares only about amount of directory he has on his list but not quality.
You want to have solid list of directory that reviewed every month, then go to http://info.vilesilencer.com/forum and you won't waste your time by opening a bunch of dead links directories

Please consider using the directory list in my signature. I do my best to keep the garbage out of the list. If you find a bad link in it, use the report feature and I'll delete it.
