Hi Guys

As you know I'm a Newbie and the opinion on directories and whether you should submit to them seems to be split around 80/20 in favour of submitting.

So for now I will carry on submitting. I have another question though do you think the directory you submit to (that is if you believe it works) have to be related to the business. Apart from Dmoz etc.

So for example I have a client who has a property portal website, is it better to submit to directories which are related to property?

Bye the way does any one have a real estate/property directory list!!!

thanks
Dan

It's more about the quality of the directory. There are some good general directories and some not so good general directories. Same with niche directories. The typical directory that lets you submit and automatically accepts you probably isn't going to be all that valuable.

Usually the better directories are those that have some measure of editorial control.

Directories contains many categories. So you should only submit it into the category suitable for you. It will considered relevant. Submit your website in some good directories only otherwise wasting of time.

You should always look for a related link to your sites. If you submit to a wrong category it might not even be accept by the directory owner more less of benefiting from it.

I think this thread has gone a little wrong.

I originally asked if it was better to submit to related directories eg. If I had a property business then submit to property related directories.

Some of the replies have said it doesn't really mater as long as you submit to the correct section and some say that if the directory is related then the link is more valuable.

Thanks for all the replies, anyone got a casting vote?

thanks
Dan

Dan both general directories and niche-focused directories can be a good place to submit. Like I said in the beginning it's more about the quality of the directory.

For example Yahoo is a general directory yet it will still be a good place to list your site. Yes, you should always look for the best category within the directory.

Most directories probably aren't going to deliver much. Few will drive any direct traffic or provide much seo benefit. That doesn't mean you shouldn't submit to them. Just know that the majority of directories aren't going to deliver much and your time might be better spent elsewhere.

I believe yes specially if you want to rank high in MSN. They really give weight to relevant categories and directories

Yes. You should submit your site to the best category that fits your site. And much better if it has pr already.
