Yes it is little helpful in increasing page rank. There are few quality web directories that will increase the PR of your website. It is dmoz, yahoo, joeant, etc. No doubt it is also helpful in increasing rank of a website.
The subdomain where you are actually listed usually have a PR 0 or n/a, At the most 1 or 2. Most of the directory have a high PR on the home page but that's it.
PR doesn't real mean anything anyway. It looks cool if you are trying to sell ad placement etc...but it doesn't really help with your rankings. It's more a consequence rather than a cause of ranking
Relevancy is key with page rank, as well as return rate, bounce rate, etc... IMO everything analytics can track plus stuff they dont want us to know about the algorithm.

I agree with most replies on here. It can help with PR, but the best way to improve PR is to have your URL linked from site that are relative in nature to your own. Posting to forums and writing articles are mostly effective.
