What is the difference between a directory and a search engine? Because directories generally have a lower value than "search engines", I would guess that the difference is in the technology they use to display the results? The availability to search for terms as opposed to browse categories?

thanks for the help!

Search Engines can index and list every page of a site and actively search for new pages and sites to list.

directories simply list the "home" page.

Search engines find things. Directories are honey pots, more like shelves you put things onto. They won't find you on their own, if you're going to be listed in a directory, you have to be put there. It's a pull vs a push.

Search engines for sure, more targeted and get a lot more traffic compared to most directories.
