I think internal linking and forum posting today is more effective than directory submissions.

I agree. I have been posting to forums and it has helped considerably with PR and getting exposure. But it surely doesn't hurt to throw your URL into web directories.

Only in the sense that walking from Portugal to Siberia doesn't hurt. It doesn't help, and it wastes valuable time that you could have used to do something that does help. Opportunity and labor costs aside, it doesn't seem to hurt.

Submitting your site to directories can improve you serp ranking. The more backlinks you get, the better serp ranking you have on your site.

Directory submission is a time consuming, long term result method.

Try forum posting, blog commenting, blogging, and article submission (all has dual purpose: traffic driving and link building)

I've just spent a good deal of time trying to figure out which of the many directories I listed my sites in actually worked for me - and without a single exception, all the listings in "unpaid" or "free" directories, no matter how high their rank earned ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in terms of backlinks. None of them were recognized by Google, Yahoo, MSN, and any of the others.

I'd be interested in comments on this.

As to the paid directories, I did earn good backlinks with YAHOO but at $300 each year - it seemed a lot of money. Mine is not a commercial site and I am not really seeling anything but providing information. Does anyone have input about this - and whether they think it a good idea to pay the annual $300 for the Yahoo listings. Or is there somewhere better to spend my money! :-)
