Compared to submitting to directories manually, it is easier or something to use a tool or two, but would the effect be that beneficial? I don't think so, or at least most of the articles I read about it don't think so.

So how exactly does using some "tool" to mass dump your links to a bunch of directories affect "SEO"?????

If you are spamming (to whatever degree), you better protect your site with an off site landing page. Go to some free web and funnel any actual visitors you get to your site through there. A couple of bad links can sink your site in google for a month or more.

I'm starting to think there really isn't anything you can do any more to make your site go viral or manipulate google into getting you lots of targeted free traffic. You need to just spread out your wings, build good content in specific niches and cross your fingers.

So good luck buddy.

Youshould select good directory manually and then submit them. Manually directory submission is a good way to promote any site.

I think that automatic directory submission doesn't help you out, it is better to do it manually so you can select those quality directories!

of course using “submission tools” will affect his SEO, it will destroy it.

- good directories either will block automated submissions or block submitters IP or both
- it will leave stupid submitters with site without links, without decent SERP and without visitors
- and of course that moron will have plenty of spare time to play around with the best submission tool money can buy

SEO and “submission tools” is oxymoron

Note of warning: Using 'tools' for search engine optimization (SEO) can lead to hazards. I've seen sites get removed from search engines just by ' trying to make their site more popular ' quicker

In brief: Tools can be used good, but remember, hard work and dedication is what these search engines are all about...That's what they want YOU to be about as well!

I agree that using an automated tool to submit to directories will have an effect to a website. Maybe for a short period of time it will have a positive effect but after a while it will all be a bad thing for the website

It will have an indirectly bad effect, not a directly bad effect. Your site cannot be penalized directly due to who links to it. It may seem that way but if you just sit tight for 6 months and let Google assess the plethora of low quality links you've given it, the worst that it will do is quite simply ignore the links. It won't penalize you in the long term.

Indirectly, your IP address will be listed as spam, and if it's added to a blacklist, a number of websites may automatically reject your submissions in future. This could quite suddenly hinder your internet marketing efforts, until you changed your IP of course, but then you may leave footprints that can be tracked etc, but I wouldn't recommend doing any of that and it's just not worth it.

The advice Topherx gave is great. If you're going to do that sort of thing, do it with an off-page site that you don't care about. And by golly me, don't use your normal IP address. In fact, if you're even asking this question, don't do it at all is my advice.

Submiteaze is a semi-automatic tool. So you do have to do a little work like pick the correct category.

I don't understand how something bad can come out of something good, unless I'm looking at this the wrong way - and Directory submission is a bad idea in the first place?

I'm going to assume it's not - as it's a great way to get yourself some backlinks! However, how does automating the process harm you at all? Instead of sitting there and making my coffee each morning - I can tell my coffee maker to do it for me!

i have very limited knowledge but i’ll try to answer your “why” question

- directory owner wants visits to his site to have better alexa ranking which only direct submission can provide
- submission via script bypasses directory submission form thus violates that form amount of characters limitations in title, description, and keywords
- submitter with submission script as a rule will violate submission guidelines because he hasn’t read them in the first place and i am sure if you ignored the rules then directory owner will penalize your ip and you can forget to get listing.
- you may say so what there is more than 30,000 of directories around but i am talking about only maybe 50 or 100 at the most directories where you want your site to be listed

if someone too stupid and too lazy to use manual submission to these 50 directories, then they deserved to be blacklisted

What's so special about those 50 directories?

I can see how it would peeve off directory owners - however, I don't understand how it can be all bad, in the sense that it will affect you're website negatively. Sure some will remove you - but quite possibly you may be able to submit to thousands of directories instantly!

I've never done this, and I know it's bad - but I don't see why .

I use diximas for my new sites and I'm happy with the results. You can use multiple titles and descriptions in the submissions. I also manually submit to the niche directories for the new site I'm promoting. You can find a list at directory critic, it's worth the time IMO.
