I have paid for submission with promise to be listed in hundreds of directories it's hard to track if listed in all of them, and like mention here some google will pick up some not. No mater what PR they are.

Just wait to approved the site it will take a month or more to approve. after approving check it with Google for as much as listing for your site while the rest of listing checking manually directory by directory..

I agree with Garfield, just focus on good SEO and site content, it's at least 90% of the battle to attaining top rankings for GENIUNE TARGET traffic. Then, directory listings on the big ones, DMOZ & Yahoo is fine plus just blog/post in forums etc. to build up site profile. Forget about getting listed in tiny indistinguishable directories that nobody uses.

It is worth submitting to the directories but it is not worth doing it by hand.

Try www.easysubmits.com - it is semi automtic and fast. It has hundreds and hundreds of free directories.
For instance, I used it about 3 weeks ago for one of my sites and it is already on page 4 of google for the keyphrase that I targeted. Make sure that if you want to be #1 on google for "my great site", use "my great site" as a title when submitting to directories.

I have shared his frustration with directory listings and didn't realize until I read this as to why I never heard back from most of the ones I submitted to. Now that I know the truth I can concentrate on the other ways you listed to get links.

Just find a directory on the Net and push the submit or suggest listing link inside the appropriate category where your website would be relevant with the content.

Many of the directories found across the web are low quality resources and many of their pages are not even search engine friendly and this is the reason why sometimes even after some months since submitting links to them, you may not find the pages cashed by Google or Yahoo. Although hundreds of directories have been launched in the last couple of years, but only a handful of them might be top quality portals and resources.

Ok this is the facts not opinions.
1.Free submission directories are nice if they have page rank 2 and more and your website is based on local country level.Example:If you work with furniture, find the best and most visited furniture web directories and be there.
2.Be sure that will be in Dmoz, pay for Yahoo and Best Of Web and also Business web directory.They can improve your rank for one month.
3.Before any submission define every page with nice page-keyword-rich-title no longer then 60 characters for every page.
4.Make original meta descriptions no longer then 150 characters for every page.
5.Primary keyword must be on home page- page title.
6.Nice content with normal keyword density.
7.Make your account on google web master tool and verify your website.You will spot all external links to your web site.Also use Yahoo to check backlinks because google don't index them anymore.
