Please let me know the best free methods available to get quality & relevent backlinks for the website.

Nothing is free. You can do directory submissions and putting your site in your signatures on forums, but it takes time and work on your part.

Try a tell a friend script. Then your visitor will tell their friends about your site.. This is the most free way to get visitors. Most other methods require a big investment of time. They include forum posting with link in sig, directory submissions, article creation on your site - if people like it they will talk about it, submitting articles to article directories, social bookmarking, link baiting.

Since you're in the directory section I'd suggest using some directories for long tail keyword phrases. It can work. Tested it myself.

There are many ways to get back links to your site.
1. submit your site to web directories
2. submit your article to article directories with a link back to your site to generate quality links and traffic
3. use blog directory as an extension of your marketing strategy and submit it blog directories.. dont forget to link your site to your blog.
4. use social bookmarking sites
5. take advantage of the forum signatures provided when you participate in a forum.

the techniques that you have suggested, directory submission and sigs on forums are free mate...

In general, those are the main ways to get backlinks, of-course, there are many others, but indeed, those are the main ones.

1. Submit your website web directories. Here it is a 1500 do-follow directories list. Take your time .

2. Submit your article to article directories. Make sure you're having unique articles, and I advice you to avoid submitting the same article to more than 10 directories. here it is a list with the best article directories. About 100 of them.

3. Use social bookmarking sites. Here it is a list with about 100 social bookmarking sites, arranged by their PR.

4. Use forums and forum signature to drive traffic and get backlinks. Here it is a list with about 200 DO-FOLLOW forums. They are arranged by PR, and the first 100 of them are webmaster related.

Also twitter is a great place to build links and drive traffic to your site. Also writing guest posts on other blogs is another great way. I just wrote a guest post for a PR blog, which will give me a nice linkback.

Try to keep your directories and blog comments relevant to your website to have a higher link back score.
