Is it true that to reach top position...your site has to be indexed in DMOZ directory? or any other directory....because with my experience, I found the each and every top position sites already indexed in the well known directories....although their pr is law.....as compare with the site which is not indexed in the directories.....

Is It True?
Our site has been not indexed in DMOZ still........

I am confused. Guide me...

Hi Rakesh,
My experience is that ---- indexing in DMOZ does not help your PR...... but if you launch a new website and want it appear on Google and other major search engines ..... it helps if it is indexed in DMOZ

Your site has a good PR. Are you sure your site is not indexed in DMOZ or Google directory?

Getting into DMOZ obviously increases PR. You are receiving back links from websites with PR, so it is filtered down. Will you attain top positions in Google and other engines from this, not likely, but you will most certainly increase your backlinks and PR.

If you are talking about imroving or even getting top results within Google then I can see that it may improve a sites ranking a little but not much. If it improve a sites ranking alot then Google won't be as popular as it is and I would stop using Google and use an alternative instead.

The reasons why I say this is because I have recently actually looked at over 300 pages within the DMOZ directory for the first time in my life and nearly all of them was a load of rub*bish.

I'm not saying that my site is the best, but after seeing most of the sites, I now know that all of my sites should get approve straight away with No questions asked.

I found alot of sites on their that is on free web pages like freewebz, geocities, etc. I also found ones that even had a proper domain name that is even design all that good. Just a little text here and then and a load of banners.

Not every site, but a load of them that seems to be listed within the DMOZ directory are a joke. I suppose most of them got in there because people were just signing up to the Directory so they could just list their own sites. Infact I have heard that alot of people has done this just so that they can get their site listed alot faster.

This seems to be a big problem with ODP and fail to see how it is benifiting the web.

Back to your original question, does it help in terms of rankings. The answer is yes it does but not hugely (depending on the competative nature of your market sector). You see, the ODP have tight rules on adding keywords in your title (unless you have a keyword domain) which in tern gives less weight to the keywords your targeting. But in order to find your listing, lets say for a web design company you will have to click throught a number of links:

Internet, web design and development, full service, W (if your web design company starts with a W)

Because Google uses link anaysis to configure it's results it not only takes into account the links pointing to your site but the links pointing to the links pointing to your site and so on and the anchor text used. So having a link in the ODP gives you a nice relevant link.

In all honesty there are easier directories to get into that will let you include a few of your keywords as your title. I would spend more time on tring to get into these rather than trying to get into the ODP which has become increasingly more dificult in recent times.

Yeah!

It is quite difficult to get into the DMOZ

I have now submitted four of my sites and none of them have been approved yet as they are still in the queue.

With one of them I have been waiting for about 2 years and it still is waiting for approvel.

I've been waiting a few months for a DMOZ listing... It is still worthwhile submitting to it IMO as it does help with other engines SERPS.

Hey Paul,

It's hit or miss with dmoz, I've had sites get listed in a week and others 6months + , it all depends on the editors and how much work they have. I basically have my list of directories that I'll submit sites to but then move on to different types of campaigns.

The best thing to do is submit and move on, there really isnt anything you can do to speed up the process. Incoming links are always valuable (quality links that is).

take care
Marc

I believe dmoz dosent really effect your pr to greatly, sure it helps but the thing about dmoz is that it helps get your website found, I brouse dmoz everyonce in a while and find websites that may not be to popular but hold important information or tools within them.

Did you know that you can subimt your site to both the main cat and the regional cat as well. Submiting to the regional cat is often much quicker to be included. The rule is you can submit to the cat for your website in the town or city your offices are located.

Once your site has included in the regional section it can make it easier to get the main listing by letting an moderater know when your in the ODP public forum asking for a status update.

As for the amount of PR that gets passed who cares, it is the strongly themed links from ODP wich has a large number of other directories that uses its data, including

Google dir
AOL
Ask
Excite

In fact there is 319 directories that uses the ODP for data. Click here for the full list

This is why it is such a shame that they have big problems and trying to get in can be harder than receiving high levels of traffic from having a No. 1 position in Ask Jeeves!

Hi all,

DMOZ is ok, but haven't really noted anything great with them. But I could be wrong. As long as my site is making some money, I am happy. They could be the reason for all the cash I am making.

Google uses my site description and title from DMOZ only when searching for "webmaster resources" which ranks high and isn't my target keywords. Google then uses my site itself for other targeted key terms, so I guess it has a positive effect being listed.
