I know.. I know.. complete noob question but it is bugging me really bad.

When submitting to a directory, most directories want you to put a reciprocal link on your website. Does this reciprocal link have to be on the homepage or can it be placed in an article or anywhere else within the content of the website?

If directory owners had any sense at all, unfortunately most of them seem to be lacking in this and only think in terms of what (they think) Search Engines "want" (and get it wildly wrong), they would ask for a link from a page that would be useful in terms of getting qualified visitors.

So this could technically be on a good quality article that has a lot of visitor views, not necessarily on the homepage or an affiliates/partners section.

reciprocal link its like exchange of links equally. Root word is reciprocate.

Hi,

I will not recommend to put directories link to your homepage.

According to me you can put directories links to any other pages like resource.html or other related page. Generally most of webmasters use this types of way to exchange links with other sites or directories but some reputed sites can ask for home page link also (About 10 to 20% only).

Reciprocal links are links with other sites which are usually are related to the theme of your website. The concept is very easy to understand, you link to a site and that site links back to you. The idea behind this goes back to you scratch my back I scratch yours. Some sites have specific requirements when linking. For example some sites might have restrictions based on content, page rank, or even domain names.

Nope I guess. But, reciprocal links although not as effective as they used to be are still effective enough to warrant the time and effort to create the relationship with other websites. One must be very picky about one's site selection and keeping the content related to your site is a must.

Reciprocal links can improve a website’s search relevance ranking, moving the website up the list of results on a search engine results page (SERP).

Reciprocal links with third-party sites can and should only be placed to inner pages. The submission form will check its placement automatically. Stay away from site-wide linking though.
