Some good (some bad) info in this thread. Several hit the nail on the head. High quality directories tend to be good for SERPs. Aside from Dmoz (hell to get into) the quality directories tend to have a price tag attached to the review, but that also means they have revenue for a marketing budget and to pay people to review in a timely manner. Those are good things and they cost money. Get what ya pay for.
Google has slapped the heck outta many directories, so the big names that did NOT experience the massive wrath of Google are IMO the route that pays off.
For actual direct site traffic I've seen good results from Local directories, though this presupposes the site is about a brick and morter business and that isnt an avenue available to a web only biz.
