Web directories are just like any other site. Some are good and some are bad. Google respects the good directories.

I find the hardest thing about listing in directories is the time it takes and how few of them actually accept your link compared to the number you submit

It's not dead. Directory submission is still alive and kicking. Google is just giving less weight to links that come from directories that are spammy or bad neighborhood. You can still get backlinks from it.

If you are thinking of submitting to directories to acquire traffic then it will not work, for only a few uses directories to search what they wanted, and most of them just google it. But don't be dismayed because directories are still a good source of free backlinks, always ensure that you submit to quality directories. Directories that are well categorized and moderated (accepts only quality sites) are the best directories for you to submit.

There are so many companies which sustain on doing directory submissions. It will never die. yeah, but the importance of directory submissions has been decreased. You can rely only upon big directories such as Yahoo, Business.com, Dmoz etc. Other directories are just for the name. They don't have much impact on backlinks of the site.

yea... true....

Well, Many sites now have the "nofollow" tag which was originally introduced to deter spammers from posting random links everywhere. The nofollow tag means that a link won't be accredited as a backlink, so when you do get links from nofollow sites they will be worthless from an SEO point of view.

So just avoid these.....

directories have been useful to me in my seo work, i can tell the difference in serps. i would say too that good directories will give you some traffic (admittedly small compared to the big search engines), but some page rank and also some pageTrust that helps with serps.
actually, msolution, there are a few directories that are no follow, just found one today. I don't always check but i do from time to time. most indeed are 'do follow'.
i will also say that it's important when submitting to a directory to see if the category/page your site is going to be on is already cached or not - submit to pages in directories that are already cached and the bot will be back around in 2-4 weeks or so or maybe less and see your new submission. a big problem with submitting to a lot of the new free directories is they have many pages/categories that never get indexed so that's of no value.

I totally agree with this post and feel that web directories hold important place in SEO and cant get obsolete so easily.

Directory submission is still alive but you should also to wait for a long time in order to include your site. Directory owner are prioritizing the paid inclusion.

if the directory is a good directory it's worth it i think, but for traffic it's not that great - but for serps it still have a positive effect - but it's declining. Social media is the big thing at the moment i think, but I will never underestimate the power of a good directory...
