I have been submitting my website to tons of directories (over 500), I am active on 5 webmaster forums (all with my link in the signature), and I have also been submitting a ton of a ton of article to about 20 social bookmarking websites.

When I go to a backlink checker website, and even on alexa.com, all of these websites say that I have 0 sites linking in... Why is this?

Because sig links and directory links are too easy to get and/or self placed they have little or no "value" so are pretty much ignored.

And apart from that;

backlink counting is probably the second most useless metric you can bother with

what's so important about backlinking? This is something i have never understood

How long have you been building links for? I usually see a delay of at least a week before my links are recognized by backlink checkers. And Alexa is kind of worthless, so don't worry about that.

And Hassan, backlinking is getting links to your site. The more you have, the higher you rank in search engines and the more traffic you will get.

just submitting your website into tons of directory doesn't mean you got more backlinks. That page should also be recognised by Google (I mean indexing) then it will be counted.

For goodness sake.

What Google show you are NOT necessarily the links that count AND they don't necessarily show you ALL the links they know about.

It's simply a random selection of the ones they have indexed. Nothing useful and certainly NOTHING to even care about.

Try checking backlinks to this site http://backlinkwatch.com/, this will take few weeks or a month.
