There are many such resources in Internet, and placing a link to your web site at least at major resources, that have good PageRank, is a good improvement. As your website is submitted to the directory or search engine, that means, this resource has a link to your website. For such search engines as Google, the more are links to your website in the Net, the more is popularity of your website, the higher it will be in the search list. Also people will come to your web page while browsing the directory, where it is submitted.
By the way, directory is an alphabetical list of names and addresses; in computer science, a listing of the files stored in memory.

It's helpfull to submit your site to directories. The more directories you submit your site, the better it is. Backlinks are very important.
And as mentioned before niche directories are more helpfull.
You may spend sometime but it will help you!

Yes it has been proved that directory submission is helpful for SEO perspective. Many SEO webmasters follow this submission process at the initial level as this broaden up the reach of the site.

So don't neglect this process if you are in concern to SEO.

I have a question for you...Are you sure that the directories you have submitted your link had the appropriate category and subcategory? If the links are not submitted in the right place, it is obvious that your site will get rejected. Search out the right place in the directories and then submit the link. Relevancy is what needed to increase the percentage of your acceptance. Directory submission is really helpful, dear.

Finding and submitting to the right category decides on the acceptance rate of your link to the directory. Hope you are selecting the right category for your website...

Yes free directory submission is really helpful to get traffic and backlinks. But you must submit your site in correct categories..
