maybe some search engines don't count them for back links, but they could not hurt your page rank!

Yes, you can submit to directories as well for getting back-links but don't be in hurry, give some time to submit your site.

On an average do 15 submission per day, not more than this otherwise there would be no advantage of submission as Google think that your spending much to enhance your business and internet is not for business it is for help of society, so consider this point.

One thing more submit your site to the subject your site deals in, for example if your site domain is co.uk, then try to find co.uk directory and most probably submit in UK section. On the other hand in your title there is any word like "internet marketing" or Online Business then try to find if the category matches your keyword not all words but if even one word matches then it is good.

I take this back...I was just on my analytics account and 70%> of my traffic source came from the different forums Im apart of, some directories I submitted to,some directory website list i'm on and...thats it..less than 6% of my traffic was from google...so you know what? when you're askin is it effective..ask if it's page rank effective or seo effective..because then the answer will be NO!...Unless it's fancy pants dmoz or yahoo directory...pfft yea right ...You know the funny party is...the things that ended up accounting for most of my traffic..i just got into to get a higher page rank on google!Like the seo/webmaster forums I became apart of was just to get seo techniques while building my links up with sig's...or the website directory traffic...that was just to build up my linkage ...and being listed on different list as a free directory website..ALL SEO TECHNIQUES!!! and at the end of the day instead of getting more search engine traffic I managed to get more traffic from the techniques themselves.smh.....

Blog Directory helps a lot to generate traffic to your site, this give you the option of providing a reciprocal link or small subscription fee. As a result, a number of links are generated regularly - helping popularity and placement on search engine results lists

By the number of threads, considering the quantities of different directories, it looks as if many people would use them.
However, I wanted to hear webmaster-talk member's input on this.

Yes I used directory submissions method for my sites and got good back links and traffic as well. Generally web masters submit their sites in many directories of low PR I think that is way they do not get the advantage. I would like to suggest you that please use only high PR sites for submissions.

while submitting web directories i never got a huge amount of traffic to my website but yes i got backlinks more times, its depend if you choose the reciprocal one it will stay for long and if free one it should have a lil time period about 6 months & if will select feature one you will surely get traffic + more backlinks in a single directory
