Hi,

I've been running a directory for around 2 years now. I like to keep it clean and as high quality as possible but still get lots of spam submissions - so much so I've stopped people being able to submit directly and now have to email me.

Any thoughts on how to reduce spam? I already have a captcha but people just seem to ignore the submission rules.

Charge a fee for consideration of inclusion into your directory. Your spam should drop to 0 and if your directory is based on an editorial process to determine which sites are accepted you'll also end up with a more useful directory.

Charging fee can help you to have no spamm submission but it will reduce number of submitted links to your directory too. So you have one choice, submission or spam

so create a stringer validator script: not captcha - no submission

and if you will charge 1$ per submission it will also stop it

making people pay will definitely help. Only quality people and sites will be able to submit. Not some fly by night company.

Robots rarely have javascript turned on so if you set a cookie and only allow submissions from users with the cookie, you'll stop most all machine spam.

Making link Nofollow is another way to not actually stop spaing but it reduces spaming.

As spamer looks for Dofollow links.
