are directories useless?

one year a go i manual submit my sites to over 1,000 directories (semi-automatic submission).
now i dont see any results, it`s like i got only 30 -40 links to each site.
so directories are waste of my time or they might be a scam - nobody bother to approved submission.
i`m talking about free directories.

I believe directories are kinda obsolete (directories like the one you talk about); I still consider good directories business.com, yahoo directory, botw, but these are paid ones.

You gained links.......
You have to submit to some directories on a regular basis.....
Some are short term.....

directories close, some get parked, lots of reasons why you may have lost those links, also some links maybe so deep they will never be found again, some directories may have dumped you, you probably would have been better off submitting to 10 a week depending on the competition.

Firstly directories cant help you to improve your traffic, And they just can help you to have some backlinks. If you want free traffic, Social bookmarking is the best way as my experience.
Secondly don't expect that your links to be approved to them.
If 20% of your submission are accepted, Its very good .
And also please note that approving your website, is related to used title and description for submitting your website.

directory submission is not worthless, it's gives backlinks and it can improve your serp.
But it is a technique what you have choose in title, dips , make unique description, so that increase your approval chances.

No, they are not useless, but submitting to 1000 directories in year is honestly nothing at all, directory submission and link building in general is a continues work which you should do in daily basis.

only because you got only 30 of 1000 listed? i don't think so
the only waste of time i can see is when some clown made post with 10,000 directories list and people bother even reply with comments.
in reality there is only so many directories one should submit in a first place.
no list in the world will help you if you just sit on your *** and don't do your own research where you should submit your site.
the simple truth is, you need only 100 -200 backlinks to get pr5 or 6, so why bother with 1000 directory, not to mention, why bother with pr to begin.
now, there is another reason why you might got bad results and that is apply to what you have submitted and how much spam you tried to feed to directories editors.
so, 40 inclusions i must say you were lucky.

Directories are still useful but if you will do submissions in high PR directories. Also check that the category in which you will submit is index by Google or not.

Yeah only submit to directories at least with a PR of 2. Anything below will not help.. They should not be a huge part of your SEO plan. Maybe spend 5-10% of your time on directories. As a previous poster mentioned, DMOZ is one of the directories you have to be on.

This is wrong, where did you get these info from!
Many useless, spam full directories were developed and still being developed on dropped domains with page rank and in return there are many web directories that do not have page rank and yet they have high editorial standards.
As any of the websites there in the internet, there are quality web sites and useless, spam full web sites and getting back links from the quality sites will help while the other will not help and might affect your web site in a negative way in the long term, the same goes for directories, if you submit your web site link to quality web directories then it will help, but if you submit your web site link to useless, spam full directories, then it will not help.

Directory submission proves to be fruitful only if done in done in good quality directories. i have observed people just pick up directory listings having many directories hosted on same server. And they don't get the benefit as they expect after making large number of submissions. So, its the quality not the quantity that pays you back.
