I do believe a link from relevant niche directories carries more value, SEOwise. I am sure it does for traffic. A recent patent awarded to Google does clearly outline how the source of a link might impact the value of a link.

This patent was awarded last May, but applied for in 2004 ... FWIW. Chances are Google has incorporated what it wants of these principles. It can provide insight, though, into the minds of Google engineers.
I agree with you on the categorizing ... it would be ideal, but I inherited this list, and it was generated with software that makes changing it rather unwieldy.
I do plan on making a new Page of "favorite free directories" and I think adding a Page for niche directories has some merit.

Yes, they are a *bit* yesterday; they aren't the boon they once were, but they remain a useful part of a site's link profile. For some industries and sites they are one of the few sources of one way links. And it's pretty clear in my experience that human edited directories can still pass PR.
