Web Directories

Hello,
Thanks for reading this message.
I am wondering if Are Free Web Directories Still Good for SEO. I still submit my websites to new directories but I don't know for sure if they do any good.
I keep submitting to these directories as a routine.
any advice is appreciated.

I really don't waste my time on directories unless I'm optimizing locally - then I may go for a local directory or two.

Sure they were... until a few years ago, this was an effective way to promote a site's SEO, even to increase Google rankings.

Then Google realized that their SERPs were being manipulated by sites submitting their URLs to massive numbers of free directories using automated submission tools. So they took action and began devaluing links from most of those directories.

If you'll notice, the home page of most of the free directories these days (I'm not talking about DMOZ.org, but the thousands (millions?) of no name directories) has a visible toolbar PR (maybe even as high as 3 or 4), yet for most of these directories the main category and sub-category pages have NO visible PR. And these pages are actually indexed.

Directories are LINKS so are marketing and advertising NOT optimising.

I recently built a website for a real estate agent. He asked me to do some directory submission. The only directories I have been using are free directories. His site has only been up for a couple of months but those directory links are coming up in google searches and they have also been picked up by other websites. One website that picked up his site has lists of links to local businesses. It seemed like all those local business links were being pulled from directories.

He hasn't done any other website promotion himself even though I have given him suggestions on what he needs to do. But it looks like free directories are helping. They shouldn't be the sole method of promotion. But they should be one of many tools you are using.

yes they are. make it a habit to submit to many directories so that you can optimize you site.

it is an obvious thing that directory submission creates backlinks and site is nothing in sight of google without having backlinks. if you are an seo you should never ask questions like this

You can get quality link from directory site,but it is a time taken task.

Yes, directory submission still has the greater value in SEO. Thes sites will provide you the permanent backlinks and moreover SE bots often crawl in these kind of sites to fetch more updates ( new websites ).
