Although they are somewhat rude and unsympathetic, there is a public forum for those who want to communicate with Dmoz's editors on a variety of issues.
Because a Dmoz listing will help your ranking in Google -
it also helps it in:
Yahoo
Aol
Netscape
Earthlink
IWon
and many more....
|
Somewhat is an understatement

I emailed an editor once to see what the status was. Later, I became an editor and found that the person labled me as a spammer in their internal notes. Just beware because some of those editors are a little touchy.
It reminds me of the Seinfield episode where Elaine gets labeled as "difficult" in her doctor's chart then she can't get any doctor to see her.

Oh... could you look into my listing... just cuz I'm so nice
disinterested nice and genuine...
Well, I hope I made you laugh.
My site is useful to people, though...
so the sooner it gets in, the better -- not just for me.

As of yesterday the submission request forum was closed at resource zone.
So that's probably why

I don't quite understand directories in general, probably because I have some brain damage, so I'm not real good with seeing things within things.. (though exercise does improve cognitive function.)
When I look at all the categories of a directory, my mind sort of spins unless I make a huge effort to pull it down and attach it visually to one thing.
Okay, so when there is such a huge directory as DMOZ, isn't it hard for anyone, even the perfectly minded, to see something within it... I mean, aren't almost all the listings at the back of the directory???
So how many people really find someone's site by using DMOZ, or any directory?
Or am I missing the whole point???

DMOZ is probably a poor example these days, as it has got so large and cumbersome. The editalls and metas do try to maintain an orderly structure and do move and prune cats whenever possible.
However it is almost impossible to find anything especially when the public search functions don't quite work as expected all the time.
What you do find though in well structured and optimised directories is the page with your link on gets found in the SERPs for the query, then the searcher clicks on the link that looks most likely. If you have done a good enough job on your description it will be yours.

Personal experience, you wont able to your submission status.
Recommendation, if no listing after couple of week since submission, may try to email the category editor.

This is what worked for me.

I actually got a site approved within 2 months. It's my only success story but, hey, at least I got one.

Dmoz editors are not slow. There are just too many submissions to review. If you want your site to get through faster make sure it's submitted to the best suited category, don't dump it somewhere and leave it for us to forward and pass along. Make sure you know what a title is versus a description, don't try to fill your title with keywords, it's a title. Check the URL you submit, especially if you typed it in. Write a short, concise description, use standard punctutation. Don't repeat your site's title in the description. We have to edit that out. Don't refer to yourself in the first person in the description. Don't use anything like "and more...".
It takes time to weed out submissions and more time to fix them. I've been with Dmoz a long time, I've seen the submissions sent in from those who call themselves experts. If getting your site listed matters to you do it right. Take your time, read the guidelines if you're not sure about something. By all means send an email to the editor of the category. However, we are all volunteers and some may not log in very often.
Hope this helps. In the long run there are far more people submitting sites than there are reviewing them. That's just the facts.

They finally listed SearchBliss, and being human edited, they placed it under the correct catagory. Give that a try.

Email the editors in other categories, but don't keep submitting your site to the wrong categories. You're just adding to the backlog that way.
