Whether one quibbles over such words as, "sign of quality", this increase in PR must be an unmistakeable indication that Google has approved of my SEO efforts.

Nope

It just means your home page has links that passed PR at sometime in the last few months.

PageRank is a effect of PROMOTION, and it might be hundreds of links that pass a mnuscule amount or a few links that pass more.

A few years ago, I owned an education website that won a contest, got a lot of links from the contest because it was announced as the winner on other pages ( of websites ) with high PR and my toolbar PR of the homepage jumped from N/A to PR3 after the update. The website had little to no content and pages weren't optimized for search engines.

This proves that Chris is correct,

and how much traffic do any of you get from directories? little to none, right?

I know many think the link has some value. But, consider how you are using your time. You can burn up many hours getting worthless backlinks in directories; or, you could spend that time improving your site, writing good content, and giving people a reason to visit you. If you spend your time creating content that people like, then your coveted backlinks will happen auto-magically.

They are still useful! But it is pretty hard to get involved with those quality web directories of high PR. Less high-quality webs are more useful than those with low quality.

Well if that's the case then it does seem pointless spending lots of hours submitting to different directories, since it literally isn't easy filling up details and complying to each directories' rules before allowing you to submit.

But I'd definitely look forward to vinicus' results.
