They were useless to begin with, and I am glad Google finally decided to slap them in the face. They filled the index with junk.

Directories, article repositories, when was the last time you saw a squidoo lens in the SERPs? All these kinds of sites, ones abused to death by SEOs, are dying. Thank God.

not really. if the directory don't display similar contents from another the it is still useful

I think this is due to content quality which some article directories are not maintaining in their website, still there are many article directories which gives a good link juice for websites and also loved by search engines.

directories have not been useful for some time now - web2 pages are still okay. its getting harder these days

directory submission is history now. forget bout it. its totally waste of time. its not working for years. i saw the last success story before 2010. so use new things.

I don't think that directory submission is dead.. If you try to go up with your site on a small niche, then some good quality directories can help you.
