Hi All

New to this site and it forums but i recently read a report going around the internet about dmoz. It indicated that as an open directory project it was beginning to fail with 2 years back log of sites to be reviewed and only actually 10k editors, but very few completing more that 1 review amonth.

My questions are

1) has anyone else read anything or heard anything
2) if this is the case how do people percieve this will effect search engines that rely on the information (inpart)

Thought it worth discussing this point

Cheers
Darren

pretty much everything has been said before. i don't even think i have to click chris's link to guess what he probably said. most people who complain about dmoz are the ones who don't get listed. submit your site, and if they are going to list it they will list it. if a site has been submitted over two years ago maybe its time the try submitting to a different category, or pay for listings elsewhere. dmoz is in the not the most important thing out there. i go by personal experience and everytime i submit a site it gets listed within 1-2 months tops. if it doesn't list by then i usually don't resubmit, but it isn't to often that i haven't gotten a site listed.

"most" is correct. I am not in that "most" because I have gotten most of my sites listed in very nice places within the ODP. With that being said I must admit that waiting two years on average has been dowright rediculous. I dont mind waiting but wish I would at least get an e-mail saying something like "thank you for waiting, we are doing our best to get to your submission and will let you know when a decision is made".

How difficult would that be? If an editor is going to complain about not having enough help, then maybe they should complain to the "higher ups" because I and many I know have applied to be an editor with no response.

The help is here waiting but the innitiative it takes to obtain it is non existant.

End result. Submit your site and forget about DMOZ.

It is very deficult to get listed in DMOZ. DMOZ editors are very strict and smart in editing.

DMOZ dead?

Nope. Its still the fastest growing web directory - currently growing at 8000-10000 sites a month (no other directory comes remotely close to that)

Nope. Its still the largest web directory - currently almost 5 million sites (no other directory comes remotely close to that)

easyhomeremedy - have you submitted all those sites in your signature? Have you read the guidelines about multiple sites? Maybe thats why you have not been listed??

I still think they rank pretty much the most important directory to be listed in.

Are you talking about the ones in your signature? Did you read the rules you agreed to when you submitted? ...esp the bit about related sites? How do you think any directory should treat those who deliberatly flout the guidelines?

What guidelines?
Since when DMOZ editors start care what you submitted?
You can follow all guidelines you want but if you site is not “unique” in editor opinion, then you have better chance to win lottery than get indexed.

Oh you have got to be kidding me, cbp. You guys list a veritable who's who of spammers (everyone wave to Wall and Hagans), people whose basic premise in life is to go around manipulating anything they can get their hands on, and our friend with the basketball sites can't get in? I'm not saying four sites that are similar deserve to get into any directory, but before you go telling him that, fix the spam issue first and stop with the idiotic ad nauseam rhetoric, already.

Quality control in DMOZ is a lot like political party boundary lines...it may have been there once, but it's non-existent now.

Have you reported them, either via the 'update URL' link or at RZ?

That particular bunch? No. Have I reported spam to DMOZ in the past? Yes, and without results. So why would I waste time doing it again knowing that it's an exercise in futility?
