How do you rank a directory as major directory?

1) What link popularity should be?
2) How many links should be in directory?
3) What is search engine index should be?

if any other please advise.

Nothing you can do.

It won't depend on any of those factors. Being a major directory isn't something you create. It's something that you have to earn.

And in my opinion out of all the directories that get launched every day and all the ones that get "promoted" in forums, there isn't one I have seen yet that is likely to acheive the status of a "major" directory, simply because they are all started for the wrong reasons.

Are there people or group who are thinking of building a comprehensive Directory that would match or less (because its a start) DMOZ ? There are a lot of great minds and programmers out there. It will surely be a heck of an idea for DMOZ to have a competition.

A lot of it is branding and name recognition. In my opinion some of the big directories are not very special. You see plenty of outdated sites, broken links, spammy sites and the like. But some have been around for a long time and have built up a lot of pagerank and name recognition and so they are considered to be major directories.

How much porn does it have on it? Porn is the lifeblood of any good directory.

Seriously, what I would define a major directory as is a directory that has a long-term reputation for listing quality websites and that provides value to its end users.

99.999999999999% fail on those grounds.

Why do you submit links to directories?
PR juice or traffic?
If pr juice then you are certainly fool because 99% directories have pr on main pages not on deep pages where your link will be placed.
If traffic then you must consider what directory owner is doing to promote the directory if he spending enough time and market then you can say it as major directory.

Here is few tips to directory promotion,
1 Always update your directory.
2. Free listing with reciprocal links are very important to improve page rank.
3 add few good and quality sites to your directory by yourself
