I've noticed this myself...but it's not like they were doing the job anyway, for the most part.

From a DMOZ "editor" (and I use the term loosely):

Quote:
DMOZ is temporarily down
Hardware problems seem to be the culprit.

Different parts are periodically up -- and there is no firm ETA on when the entire site will be functional and restored.

What does them mean?

Simply that while the public side is up and down, the results shown may not be the most current -- so don't panic, it will all get sorted out soon.

There seems to be a status update going on here:

http://www.ihelpyou.com/forums/showt...threadid=23510

Mind you, it's DMOZ, so don't expect anything from them. Quite frankly, I just wish people would stop submitting to them outright as I have and let them run the thing into the ground naturally.

That's not fair!
All editors are free to spend anytime to register your sites!
This is not a job and you are welcome to become an editor too!
Before to complain.....come to join them and you will know!!

Actually, that's a reasonable statement. DMOZ does have a certain political structure that they tend to enforce, and those who seek to improve it by offering new ideas are shot down. It's one of the major reasons I've never bothered to apply to become an editor...that, and I was told my app would be rejected if I would because "you don't fully subscribe to our concept".

Personally, I treat it as I would any other trash directory. I submit because it's there, and then I forget about it.

Dmoz is dead. Forget about Dmoz. You can try to add you site and that's all. There are many others web directories on the internet.

That's what I was thinking when I first heard about this. Has anybody actually gotten a site listed in DMOZ?

I've submitted several sites over the past year or so and haven't gotten anything listed. I haven't even bothered submitting my last few sites 'cause I just forget about DMOZ as an option.

I managed to get one site listed a few months ago. Once the page my link was on was re-cached, I got just a small allinanchor/SERPS movement for the keywords used in the title. I could have just paid for a link on a decent directory, and received more link juice.

Yes, that is true. After getting one of my sites listed, after a few weeks it gave me a few more backlinks and that is about it. DMOZ has lost its juice, but we still all want to be listed in it.

Because it's tied to other things and still has some influence.

DMOZ descriptions are used by the big 3 by default (although there's a way to stop that via the robots tag).
It's syndicated to other directories.
Big G still uses it as its directory (although they don't have the link as part of their menu anymore like they used to.)

Their influence is declining, but it's still there.

Well, there are a lot of superstitions regarding DMOZ. Some say that Google treats Dmoz in the different way than any other directory. This is really wrong. Google has never done such a thing(Nothing reported).

People are just assuming because Google luvs Open source. But, this is not the case. A friend of mine is listed in Dmoz. He has only a minute raise in his search engine traffic. He did an experiment and he got the same no.of visitors from another PR 9 link.

Dmoz is dead and crap. But I won't tell you not to submit. The PR is 9 u know !
