Web Directories

I see tons of references to lists of 100's and 1000's of directories, but when I look at them most of them are PR0 and have an Alexa in the millions. These directories may one day get more traffic etc. but is it worth taking the time to try to submit to many of these? Has it helped anyone who has done this?

I usually submit to 2 new directories per day. I find that submitting when they are brand new can mean a higher level of success. Here is a good place to find announcements of new directories:

Dan it depends on the directories. Some will be good and others won't matter much at all. Try not to think about it only in terms of PR and Alexa. Alexa data is pretty much useless and PR will only tell you so much.

There are some good general directories, but most aren't going to be worth all that much. Here's an article from SEO Book that should help determine which ones might be better than others.

Outside of the general directories you can look for directories local to your area or niche directories related to your site. And remember it's not all about PR.

I suspect niche directories will give you a more steady stream of traffic rather than general directories. Personally I run a niche Pagan directory and although the traffic is quite small it is very highly focussed, and I often get people staying on site for hours at time while they visit interesting links.

I think directories are the places where search engines roam about the most in search of quality sites. Directoru submissions are vital when you think it this way. But PR is almost always inaccurate. But, since there aren't any other accurate parameters, PR does matter.

Niche directories get more hits. But why would anyone go to a niche directory to know about something. I've heard search engines crawl only general directories often. So, its not that good I guess. *sleepy*

I started submitting to directories one one month ago, with a daily submission of around 35 directories (I worked full time on my website), and now some of my pages rank well in google, and I can get visitors from google every day. Though only 2-4 visitors, it's better than nothing which was the situation 1 month before.

Even if those directories has pr 0. It also give you traffic.

My list of free directories is in need of an overhaul which I will do over the weekend but has the handy feature of being sortable by PR if thats the criteria you are using for your submission.

I think that its worth it, it gives you more backlinks which can mean more traffic. Although 0PR directories i belive are useless/worthless.

I submitted one of my sites to each free directory that I found. Now, after six months, my site is 9th in Google SERPs for very competitive phrase. So I think the links from directories still have very good value. Hope after 6 next months, my site will be in first position for my targetted keywords

I think submitting to directories is worth the time and effort. I really only look for those with a good pagerank on the page that my listing is likely to appear. But having said that, if I see a directory that has no pagerank but it looks like a quality directory then I still submit to them.

I've been submitting to directories for a couple of months now. No immediate improvement, but I think these things take time.

Keep submitting to directories. It means loads o free inbound links...serach engines give it a lot of importance and in turn you get more traffic.

Submitting to Directories doesn't help directly in pulling traffic but indirectly yes it does.

Purpose t submitting to directories to create a one way link and increase your high PR. Which in return will improve your ranking in google and that can lead to higher traffic.

But you should take care of following things when you submit to directories :
1) Directory is SEO friendly
2) They are high PR directories or are on the way to be high PR, I've seen so many directories that are PR0 but they are on there way to PR3 - PR4
3) Check how may pages are already indexed on yahoo, google and msn.
