Just tried it and got the submission page for DMOZ. Now they can ignore submissions once again.

DMOZ has got such a handsome pagerank that being listed in it will definitely help boost a site's rank. Plus, Google Directory depends on ODP RDF dumps, so this makes getting into DMOZ a top priority among webmasters.

rajansslance,

Unfortunately, getting your site listed on DMOZ is harder than it sounds. Google "DMOZ" and you'll see what I mean. I've heard horror stories about some sites waiting years before getting listed, and that's still good news, mind you! Most sites don't get listed, it's at the editor's discretion to list you or not. I wish the policies over at DMOZ become more democratic, maybe if enough webmasters raise hell it might happen, but I won't be holding my breath waiting for this to happen. Meanwhile, it would be best to go about getting yyour site into the other directories, establishing reciprocal links with related websites and writing and submitting articles.

Cheers,
Sirius

What you are saying would be true if the purpose of DMOZ was to provide a listing service to webmasters. As DMOZ is not in the "business" of being a listing service then what you say is irrelavent. Plenty of other directories provide the service you seem to be expecting from DMOZ.

Its one thing to criticize DMOZ; its another thing to pretend DMOZ is something that its not and then criticize your characterization of it.

I really don't worry too much about DMOZ. I submit to them but after that I don't even give it a thought. If I get listed then great but I am not going to worry about it. There are plenty of other worthwhile sites to get your link on.

DMOZ needs to get their act together I think.

I just don't get this. What do you actually mean by "get their act together"? I presume you might mean something like provide a better service to webmasters to list their sites? As DMOZ does not provide that service, how can it "get their act together"? Plenty of other directories provide a link listing service, but DMOZ is just not one of them and does not want to be one of them, so in that context it has no act to get together.

Don't forget that the only people that bag DMOZ are webmasters who want a free listing for their site. I have NEVER seen a single complaint from a DMOZ user.

Seriously, has anyone here actually gotten a site into DMOZ? I still submit my new sites, but I have yet to see any of them get accepted.

* sighs *

I just wish I could post the link to the thread on another forum where a DMOZ editor actually acknowledged that not all issues that webmasters bring up are strictly to do with their own sites. We actually had a pretty interesting dialogue that I'd like to share knowing that at least one other DMOZ editor is reading this thread (it should be pretty obvious who he is, since he's also posting to it ) and maybe...just maybe...a lot of the other issues surrounding the bigger issue can be solved.

Unfortunately, the site containing the thread in question is down. As soon as it's up, I'll post it.

Ahh, it's back up.

http://www.ihelpyou.com/forums/showt...Z&pagenumber=5

I'm not sure if this will work for you guys, because I'm a member there. If not, it's the last page and the starting point is:

Quote:
Dave, I was with you up until the "list everything in Google" bit. If they did that, there'd be even less of a point in using them than there is now, since they'd be no different than Google. That's not unique...that's content regurgitation.

The other person, spectregunner, is a DMOZ editor. Watch how he answers the questions. Watch how he indicates comprehension of the point. Watch how he realizes that other editors will be hardasses and rather difficult to convince.

Now I will grant that a lot of the *****ing is self-absorbed webmaster *****ing because their sites aren't listed. But some of us out there who have made comments that cast DMOZ in a negative light don't fall under that category. We have sites (as in plural) and pages (again as in plural) listed in DMOZ. In some cases, we haven't even submitted those sites and pages. We just want to see them have some value.

Just submit once and forget it. I did it years ago and still not there.
