here's the deal; google can define very easy which directories are well done; they only have quality sites listed; so, to have a link from those directories is very much appreciated by google

to google those directories are a huge team of human reviewers; that's the reason why submitting to directories is so effective to improve your ranking

... besides that ... except for some of the bigger directories ... they're totally worthless

A huge team of human reviewers?
How is that the case when directory entries are self submitted?

I agree, there may be many directory sites out there, but i' constantly getting traffic from the directories I have submitted you. Some you would think don't even look like they get traffic. But the point is they make my site findable on some level.

Also the traffic is likely to be targeted.

in my opinion submitting to directories give you a lot of back link rather than traffic.
it might give you a little traffic if they click your listing but mostly submitting your site
to directories increases your back link and PR.

It's simple, directories are great source of one way link. Though you need to carefully place your site on the most relevant category. Also, directories with PR greater that 3 are great. People build these directories to offer link submission to those sites that needs appears on world wide web. Originators may earn from it if they offer it for certain amount plus added service to the submitters.

The reason why directory links worth so little is mainly because directories themselves have little value.

Not all directories are created equally. I don't think that a directory should just display a few lines about a website. I think it should showcase the company's work, have user reviews, Google maps, quick messaging etc...

This Design Directory for Orange County design firms is a great example of what I mean.
