The disturbing thing about this is that I don't find this surprising in any way, shape or form.

ThePopulist just showed you why he's living with his parents with $40 to his name. He accused you of running a scam you couldn't possibly run without any billing information (credit card, bank account, something to draw from).

And why would you target a guy with $40? The most you're gonna get is...$40. And that's assuming he hasn't spent it by the time you can pull the scam off!

If his site were up, I'd link to it just so he could give his side of the story again (and just so I could laugh at him). Nevertheless, cabron, you learned a lesson...beware of who you help out.

"No good deed goes unpunished." I've learned that too many times in my own personal life.

This is "the 80/20 rule" in effect. 80 % of people in general - on the net, on the street, in the store - genuinely want to help other people out if they can. This guy is so obsessed with the 20 % that he doesn't believe the rest of us exist.

That's actually really nice of you to give somebody down on their luck a free site if having a blog is important to them. If anything, it sounds like you could email the guy a bill and he'll ignore it ... scary. I'd hate to get an email saying I owe someone money - it's not like I don't get 20 a day saying I won the lottery or got approved for a business loan. I just don't see any potential for how a scam could possibly work in that situation.

I remember hearing a story a while back on the local sports talk radio station here. The DJ ended up with two spare tickets to a Toronto Blue Jays game that he couldn't use, so before the game he went down early to the Skydome (no wait, Rogers Centre) and tried to give them away to a kid and his father/mother/aunt/uncle/whoever the kid was with.

It took him six tries to be able to do it because people were so suspicious of his motives. People spit on him, yelled at him, argued with him, thought there was a catch of some sort...the guy just plain couldn't use them.

This is why I don't own a television, or watch too many movies. We're sold on this idea that we live in a dangerous society where everyone is out to get out and you have to trust no one ... real life seems to be the opposite.

Oh grief...I just agreed to do a free layout for a home page for a 13 year old I have a soft spot for simply because he's a "geek-wanna-be" who's sorely lacking in talent so far ... but he causes grief for a lot of others (in local forums and via e-mails). Hmmm...what timing! I guess I best tread very carefully.

I've heard similar stories. I've also seen people shy away from getting the free shampoo samples or whatever. There's an innate fear of that unstated "catch" or of a bad joke.

A lot of ppl have this, but where you and i live most ppl would take just about everything without no questions.... even with u not knowing

Yeah, I know what you mean, but at the same time, that's exactly the reason why we're so overly cautious. It was here that I noticed the behavior I mentioned above. They might give you the shampoo with one hand, and take your wallet with the other.
