If they don't suck for you, it may all be due to different expectations or usage. I read about their mysql being slow for example, but for a site that doesn't rely much on it, I guess it wouldn't be much of a bother.

How do you define cheap hosting? What are your site's actual needs?

If you dont have a problem with them, why do you move? Just because someone says it is bad - doesnt have to be.

This pretty much sums it up.

Static sites will have no problem with DH. Most mysql sites will not unless they are heavy query sites.

I had problems so I left. That does not mean they aren't right for you or the type of sites that you host.

they seem fine for me at the moment and i run about 5 sites using mysql so i will stick with them as they are cheap. my new site will be pulling in alot of traffic so we will see

Well of course if you are a big host the opinions about your service would differ... but i've seen quite a few good ones about dreamhost and their policies are quite flexible..

I signed up for DreamHost using their $10 for a year offer and have been pleasantly surprised. Yes, they don't have the standard cPanel however all I needed was WordPress, which was fairly easy to install.

IMO,if you have many websites,Dreamhost is one of the best hosts you can use.

For cheap web hosting dreamhost is ok.

Dreamhost was good at one point of time but they have had loads of negative feedbacks in the past.
I would suggest that you go in for some small established hosts. They offer better support and treat their clients a lot better than the biggies out there

Over at phpLD we have had quite a few users that left Dreamhost because they were either dissatisfied with the server setup or the service.

what i dont understand is why do the big companies like host gator and places like that oversell so much? Surely they can put the plans down and still get the customers they get.

It's real life experience that taught them that's not actually true. Like it or not, people want allocations way bigger than their needs, and, I suspect some just want to know they got the best possible deal, even if it's just on paper. Same thing sometimes goes for computers (and mind you, they're much more expensive than hosting). Ever seen anyone buying a top of the line computer just to chat on Yahoo, browse the web, and do other mundane things like that? I know I have.

It's all a marketing game they play with us, the customers - if they didn't post those huge overselling numbers people will go somewhere else where they *think* they are getting a good deal.
