So if I host videos on my site, I can link to them and will never run out of bandwith? What really is unlimited?

There is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth...

The term, unlimited, means it never ends, now bandwidth has to end at one point or another because the server will just crash. So, there is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth. Sorry.

However, he can offer no limit to you if he is willing to pay the overhead if you go over his limit.

Old 06-10-2004, 07:01 PM The "Unlimited Bandwidth" Issue

Actually, the term unlimited as it is used in hosting industry parlance means that a hosting company will not limit general traffic usage --or in other words will not charge on a pro rata basis (or otherwise) for bandwidth, provided there are no abuses.

Ergo, the term "unlimited" does not relate to raw unabridged usage, but rather the extent to which a user will not be charged for general usage of bandwidth. The caveat is that the usage (bandwidth consumption) must be reasonable. Each responsible host defines what is reasonable in their acceptable usage policy.

Indeed, in our case we do not charge clients for consumed bandwidth provided their usage is consistent with our acceptable usage policy. In a nutshell, we permit a client to have unlimited traffic to their website. This is for sites serving web documents and NOT those being used for storage (no offsite storage area for electronic files). Limitations are- of course --placed on download-, archive, image, and multimedia-intensive sites (and other types of sites) where functions or activities would frustrate our intent to provide an uncapped service and/or strain our system resources.

I do hear what you are saying, and I am well aware that there are many web folk who love to state "there is no such thing as unlimited" whenever they can.

I like to think of it like this... it's sort of like when you get cellular service and the carrier tells you that you have free nationwide cellular service. However, as with every service offering there are limitations and exceptions. That's why we have definitions, terms of usage and contracts. With my cellular example, the free nationwide service would not include, inter alia, instances where you are charged because the cell phone was outside the carrier's network. Similarly, certain people could argue that the carrier was lying and there is no such thing as free nationwide roaming. But they would be wrong.

While this is not a perfect analogy, hopefully it provides context (and food for thought) with respect to the unlimited bandwidth issue.

When you said "unlimited," you must mean unmetered.

Actually your wrong.

It means the host is praying you dont have videos, downloads or anything that would consume anything higher than 5gig. It is a way of attracting nieve hostees.

This happens all too often. They oversell their space and start praying to god you never use your allocation. Dirty nasty trick that aids your cause not one bit if your running a busy site.

Simply dont beleive a word they say. Instead pay a little extra and choose one who states that they dont sell over allocations with the hope of you not using yours.

I'm in the business of looking for a new php5 host. Ive been happy with namehog for the past few years but they refuse point blank to go php5 (whcih also has been around a few years and what i realy want to be coding in these days).

Finding a good reasonably priced one is not as easy as oipening a web browser and searching for php5 hosts.
Ive been checking out wesh which is currently on the top of my list but its far from decided if these will be the ones.

I think a few phone calls would not go amis when deciding too.

Yeah that's true but unmetered bandwidth is possible only for the dedicated servers and on shared account it is as dishonest as unlimited.
