If your site's traffic is predominantly coming from a certain country, it's not a bad idea to host there. Hosting locally will mean a slightly faster page load time, and might bring in some SEO benefits. However, if you use a country specific domain name then the SEO benefit is already there. Make sure that the servers really are in that area, as lots of hosting companies may cater locally, but rent servers in the US for example.
Some would also prefer dealing with a local company as should things go sour, it's easier to make the host responsible, there might be customer protection agencies you could easily appeal to etc. Also, if support is not there 24/7, the time difference can be a serious issue.
