I always see 99.9% uptime and 24/7 service guarantees.

What I'd like to see are guaranteed server speed stats.

All Hosting/Servers are NOT created equal.

Is there any way to determine the speed of the host before you buy? Any benchmarks?

Thanks,

jk

Yeah do an IP Ping. I myself see speed as being very important. Visit http://www.fastrack-host.com if you need FAST hosting. Speed is everything!

Hi FastRack,

I am surprised that this thread has received so little attention. I guess I'm the only guy on a slow server.

I wish you had SqlServer and ASP.NET.

The best method to find out how fast the server's hardware is, ask I guess. Though the server speed is not as imporant as whether the server itself is over loaded with accounts.

You can look at bandwidth providors and network infrastructure. Many times hosts will also provide you with a test download file so you can test performance.

Well we use Dual Xeon (dual opteron on the way) and are located on the PEER1.net network which has amazing pings and server speeds are grand. Basically speed should usually be found out using a ping/tracert and server hardware and network.

Very true, we are using the same, and also have some Dual Opterons on the way . Testing a dynamic page wich uses PHP/mySQL would be a good way to test performance. Although an overloaded (oversold) Dual Xeon can perform the same as a overloaded Celeron.

Which would be the best server processor? (Chip, i.e. Xeon, Opteron, Celeron, blah?) *dances because his servers will be colocated at a Tier 1 Network Access Point* - www.napoftheamericas.net

Xeons and Opterons by far outperform Celerons, I have no actual exprerience with Opterons, although I have seen benchmarks and heard many people say that Dual Opterons outperform Dual Xeons hands down. That is why the next few servers we will be using will be Dual Opterons.
