Good to hear that you're getting results with your affiliate program. That's the important part. Yes, as merely an additional income, the payment schedule becomes less of an issue. They earn their living through other means.

Your post does confirm my scenarios. If they have about one sale every 2 months, it will take them more than 1 year to get their first payment.

Though I agree that money earned from being an affiliate isn't usually the main part of income, but payment schedule IS important.

I have to say that we have such rules and they are the same for everyone. We got 6 month as not spontaneous decision. As rule our affiliates are web designers (web developers) and it might take up to 2 months for first referal. We do not offer direct way of earning money - only for additional one.

For publishers (affiliates) there are no fees. For advertisers, there are significant fees (last I heard 30% of the total sum paid to affiliates). You'll have to ask them directly for up-to-date figures though.
