Hello! I am new to using forums so please excuse me, I am by no means a web or computer expert but I do have a little bit of knowledge.

The reason I signed to webmaster-talk was to hopefully get some advice on the following...

I run a small company and have grown to sufficient size to require an ftp facility with which to share files with my customers. I have my own website and use a hosting company to host my site. However, this company does not offer the FTP service that I require so I have decided to investigate the possibility of using a spare computer I have to run as an FTP server.

I have downloaded some FTP server software and have managed to get this to work fine but I don't understand how to map a domain name to the IP address of my computer that I'm using as an FTP server - or whether I can use my existing website domain name but as an FTP site.

Thankyou for any help. Also, if I'm doing the forum thing incorrectly please direct me to the correct place.

Thankyou :-)

well, if your thinking of running an FTP site from your computer, you'll want a decent router that will allow you to configure various settings. You'll also need a public IP issued from your ISP.

Hope this helps some,

Hi,

Is the need for a public IP address to do with the fact that it's a static address?

Also, can you recommend a decent router that could cope with this?

Once you've got a public IP address is it then reasonably simple to have this associated with a domain name.

Thanks for your help,

Lee

You cannot manage your site using your own FTP.

There are too many reasons why not so I won’t deal with this now.

What you can do, is to create Super User in your hosting account, change all permissions
to that SU and give access to that FTP account to all members of your group.

This way you all can edit, upload and download your files and solve your file-sharing situation

I have to add that your idea won't work, due to the poor computer config and poor pipe line. If you are interested in file hosting - yo'd better have a look at the server (dedicated one) with good configuration (CPU and RAM)

zappanet that is true about your statement, i would almost go with a host if you will be using FTP in a public sense, if it were private and bandwidth use was nominal, then i would say yes.

Hello,

Thats true, now a days most of the hosting provider gives unlimited FTP accounts, so I will also recommend you to check with another provider.

Please let me know in case you have any more queries, I will be glad to assist you.

Thank you.

I know hosts offer FTP tutorials, I know siteground.com offers one
at http://www.siteground.com/tutorials/ftp/.
Ask your host for assistance, that's something up to them.

You can also set an anonymous FTP so the visitors can browse your files without needing to login

Mega

Sorry if this upsets you but there are so many variables you simply haven't considered.

Bandwidth
Router
Statis IP
SDSL
Data Security and Integrity

Far far cheaper to get someone else to deal with the headaches.

I have run FTP servers in the past but only ever for client sensitive data that I needed to have complete control of and we had an SDSL line going into Adv Server 2003 running a 3rd party FTP server so the usual idiots out there couldn't brute force into the windows system. If I did it now... I would have a long har talk with myself about why I needed to host the data locally.

Thanks for the comments folks.

I'm thinking that you are right Harlequin. I have managed to get a simple FTP setup from behind my router now and I'm resolving my IP address via dyndns.org - but now that I've dug a bit deeper into the issue I can see that this going to take up too much of my time. I thought it'd be simpler - and cheaper - than buying FTP space, but hey that's why I'd thought I'd ask some folks in the know via a forum...

Can you suggest any reliable and cheap FTP hosting sites? I use a small company for my website hosting and they don't provide FTP with separate client logins?

Thanks again for your comments...

Separate client logins? I'm not really sure what you mean by that.
Will they login thru the same account as you or from their own personal account?

Any cpanel web host will allow you to quickly and easily set up all the ftp accounts you want from right there in the control panel.

How cheap is actually cheap? You may get unlimited ftp accounts from webhostingbuzz.com at $4-5mo and from lypha at $7mo. Is this cheap?

Which control panel are they using. As Qwest said Cpanel allows you to create some, unless you have package with 1 FTP on it.
